Population Research Centre (PRC) attached to the University of Kerala was founded in 1958 with a mandate to address the issues of population control. The Centre has expanded its research areas to critical issues of population, health, gender and development over the years. The Centre is fully funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and is part of the network of eighteen Population Research Centres throughout India. Initially it was formed as the Family Planning Communication and Action Research (FPCAR) project in the University of Kerala in the year 1958. Later in July 1983, the Centre got its institutional status as Population Research Centre when the Demographic Research Centre under the Government of Kerala and the FPCAR Project were merged together. The Centre now occupies an area of about 261 square meters of the new second floor of the existing building constructed with grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Centre is a fully developed PRC with 4 faculty positions and 13 technical staff. The Centre has been undertaking research works on various subjects related to population, Reproductive and Child Health, Family planning, Health and Development. The study findings have been used for planning and implementation of population and health related programmes of the Government at various levels. The research studies of the Centre are being published periodically as report series, working paper series, seminar papers and journal articles. The PRC is celebrating its golden Jubilee in the year 2008-09.
